Assistant Professor Martin Graham Spivey has been appointed to Graduate School of International Resource Sciences

Assistant Professor Martin Graham Spivey has been appointed to the Department of Resource Policy and Management of the Graduate School of International Resource Sciences as of September 1st.
His main role is to support the implementation of the faculty's English language program and help students with learning English.
The following is his message.

Nice to meet you. My name is Martin Graham Spivey and on September 1st I joined the Akita University Graduate School of International Resource Sciences as Assistant Professor. I hold an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the University of Birmingham in the UK. My main role is to support the implementation of the faculty's English language program and to help provide our students with the tools necessary to succeed in an increasingly competitive global labor market.
Aside from my teaching duties, I am keen to conduct empirical research in order to make a contribution to academia and society in general. My research interests include discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and learner corpora. In particular, I am interested in utilizing corpus tools to examine newspaper discourse and how language is used to represent various events and groups of people. I also wish to further examine the English language production of university students through corpora, with the aim of informing my own pedagogical approach as a language instructor.
The International Resource Sciences faculty has a diverse range of students and staff, not only from across Japan, but also around the world. This variety of backgrounds and life experiences can truly benefit our students and help them to achieve personal growth as they study hard to gain an education that will lead to a successful and fulfilling career. I very much look forward to working with other members of the faculty to support the students on their journey.
